Merriest Christmas & Happiest New Year from the Jenks Tribe

Processed with VSCO with f2 presetMerry Christmas & Happy New Year dear ones!

The time has come once again, to celebrate as we reflect on this year of 2017 & look ahead with bright eyes towards this next year of 2018. It has been such a BEAUTIFUL year! We are so grateful for all that our little tribe has gotten to experience as we have grown & continued to watch the glorious King of Heaven bring light & life to all around us. We hope that you have also tasted beauty & embraced happiness as you have journeyed through your year!

The beginning of our year brought us snow & rain, & therefore lots of bundling up & playing outside along with tea drinking & book reading inside. It also brought us lots of time with family. One wonderful thing that the winter season brings is more time together inside playing & snuggling. We are big fans. Noah & Katie’s dad finished up our incredible fixer-upper home remodel, & on February 1st, we moved into our NEW HOME! It is gorgeous, you guys. A dream come true for our family! Noah has continued to lead worship at our church once a month & our family worship nights are a regular part of our evening routines. On March 15th, Katie was declared 5 YEARS CANCER FREE! We have been doing a happy dance for 5 plus years & we are nowhere near stopping! On March 29th, Eliana Marie turned 4! We celebrated with family & friends at a park, she got a giant balloon & requested chocolate cupcakes with strawberries so that’s just what we had. It was simple & perfect.

The spring brought us more rain & exploring, we enjoyed frequenting parks (swing are Cora’s favorite), visiting local trails for hikes, playing in local places like Columbia & our favorite, Pinecrest, & enjoying daily walks in our amazing neighborhood. Katie continued to make our Jenks Abode into a haven for our family with baby numero 3 on the way & Noah coached spring track. The girls played outside in our backyard & did lots of painting & crafts. We played music together as a family each night (usually including at least one rendition of Old McDonald prior to worship) & took the girls blueberry picking. On May 30th, Cora Kinsey turned 2! We celebrated with our family & some close friends at our home with a moon & star theme because Cora loves the sky! It was a sweet time. We also were able to visit with Eliana’s birth family & had the honor & joy of meeting her biological grandma for the first time! We love adoption, it such a beautiful thing.

June brought us the end of the school year for Noah with his 7th & 8th graders as well as the end of our first year of preschool with the girls. It also brought us one of the best gifts in the whole world. On June 20th at 2:16pm, SEBASTIAN WILLIAM JENKS was born! He weighed 8lbs .09oz & stretched out at 20in long. He came earth side after being flipped the right direction 5 times, multiple bellybands & being induced. It was an intense 22 hour labor & a natural delivery, bringing us our first SON! We are so grateful he is a part of our family! The remainder of the summer called for rest for our little tribe along with trips to Santa Cruz, Oregon & of course lots of time up at our family cabin in Pinecrest.

The fall has brought us more time settling in as a family of 5, Katie started her second year of homeschool with the girls & has continued to sub at the high school & Noah began his 5TH YEAR of teaching! Woot Woot! We have taken trips to Texas, San Diego, Monterey & surprised the girls with a visit to Disneyland. As the days have gotten progressively colder, we have enjoyed daily fires in our wood stove, walks to collect the beautiful fall leaves around our neighborhood & enjoyed baking together in the kitchen. By the time you read this letter, our children will be 4 ½, 2 ½, and almost 6 months old! We are absolutely smitten with them & the way our life is FULL of snuggles & our house is covered in books, princess dresses, collections of rocks, & pinecones. We are blessed beyond measure with a roof over our heads, food on our table, jobs that we love, children that we adore, & a God who loves us relentlessly, even when we don’t deserve it. Day in & day out we sing praises for the beautiful life we have been given, with all of its ups & downs because He is worthy of it all! We are so grateful that HE IS GOOD & has given us the ability & privilege to love people well, to BE KIND, & to bring light & life to those around us.

With that, CHEERS to you & yours! We are so thankful for you & the role you play in our life, whether it is near or far. May you find more reasons to REJOICE this Christmas season than you can count, so that you can continue with your thanks all year long. May your heart be light & your home cozy. May you be surrounded with people that you love & may you love others well. Be kind. Love well. Bring life. We’ve got this! Lets bring light to this world during this holiday season & all year long. May your 2018 be sweet & full of ABUNDANT JOY. We love you. Happy Christmas!

Faithfulness

“We are not here to be successful, we are here to be faithful.” -Mother Teresa

image3

This has been a theme in my life, especially in my married life. I feel like it consistently comes up in conversations between Noah & I as we think about how our life has been, how it is right now & it comforts us with our future. His faithfulness in our lives is etched in like a marble memorial. It is set in stone, never changing. Without Jesus, we would be a hot mess. Don’t get me wrong, I am a hot mess all on my own some days, but boy… I would be SO much worse without Jesus. Noah & I both would be. In our marriage, these last 8 1/2 years, faithfulness has carried us, washed over us & sealed us with a grounded foundation knowing that we WILL make it. That we are taken care of. Day in, day out, with whatever life throws at us, we know His faithfulness is never failing.

Here’s a laundry list of faithfulness in our life:

-Traveling the world

-Asking for specific jobs & getting them every time

-Asking for specific cars & getting them every time

-Buying our first home

-Being healed from cancer

-Adopting Eliana & having a beautiful relationship with her birth family

-Being able to get pregnant even after cancer treatments

-Traveling to Europe

-Giving birth to Cora

-Selling our first home for more than double

-Buying our second home in our desired neighborhood

-Traveling with our kiddos & my parents internationally

-Giving birth to Sebastian

-Continued health for each member of our tribe

-Food on our table

-Time together as a family every summer & at holidays (Thank you for being a teacher Noah!)

I could go on & on. I actually keep a list in my phone of things that I am grateful for, so in  a moment when my heart squeezes with gratitude I can write it down to remember. All of those things remind me of His faithfulness & how blessed I am. It’s a wonderful thing to acknowledge the fact that being alive is a gift & that it is FULL of GOOD things. I am so grateful!

image1

The definition of faithfulness according to the dictionary is as follows: the quality of being faithful; fidelity. As much as I can go on forever about the faithfulness of our God, in the same breath it is a theme for myself as well. I want to have the QUALITY of being faithful, I want to be that way for myself & the people around me. I want to treat ALL of the things that I participate in with faithfulness. I want to do my job as a parent, as a spouse, as a teacher, as a reader, as an athlete, as a cook, as a traveler, as an artist, as a researcher, as a homeowner, as a human being, etc., – faithfully. I want to be faithful in all of those things & more. I want faithfulness to MARK my life. I want to be known by it.

image5

On days when I am worn out (which is a lot lately due to a 3 month old who isn’t sleeping through the night yet), I know that it is beneficial for my spirit to be renewed by the beauty that finds its way into each & every nook & cranny of my life. Part of the way that I do that is to reflect on His faithfulness & how it carries me. It also draws me into a deeper desire to exemplify that for those around me- for my husband, for my kiddos, for myself. I want to be faithful. I want to say something & follow through. I want to manifest faithfulness in a tangible way for my littles, so they know that they are carried in our family as well as carried by our beautiful King. I want them to grow up & have faithfulness be a theme of their lives.

“Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies.” -Mother Teresa

IMG_8733

It’s a great thing having it be a testament in my own life, in my story. I can’t edit it out without LITERALLY changing the outcome of where we are now. If it weren’t for His faithfulness, I would not be here today, I am confident of that. So faithfulness brings me hope, brings me peace, & pushes me to reach higher, go deeper, be better. Because I know. I know that I know that I know that He is faithful & always will be. And because He has already won, I win. It’s awesome.

“Kindness & faithfulness keep a king safe, through kindness his throne is made secure.” -King Solomon

image2

So I’m speaking to myself- today, as I sit here feeling a bit worn out, I will take some deep restorative breaths & reflect. I will look at today & know that it has already been taken care of & that whatever comes tomorrow or the next day will be fine because He already knows & his faithfulness abounds. His grace is sufficient in my weakness & I will rejoice evermore in my partnership with Him. I am grateful & I will CHOOSE to be faithful.

“Faithfulness lives where love is stronger than instinct.” -Paul Carvel

P.S. All these photos are from a family (my mom + my sister + her 3 girls + me + my 3 kiddos) field trip we took to Columbia State Park earlier this week. 🙂

Cheers,

Katie.

2016 Recap

“In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.” -Abraham Lincoln

I want to share our Christmas letter with you. It has been 7 years of writing these letters & I love how it is a concise (in my opinion 😉 ) way of recapping what the year has held for our little family. These past weeks have been a whirlwind of holiday-ness, lots of family, intentional time spent together playing, eating, creating, enjoying time with one another. It really was a sweet, perfect way to end the year of 2016!

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year dear ones!

The season has come again in which we share with one another the good things that this last year of 2016 has held for us, where we focus on the GLORY of BEING ALIVE in a world where each & every day there are blessings to be seen & experienced. It has been quite a year for our little Jenks Tribe! We are overwhelmed with GRATITUDE for the grace that the King of Kings has shared with us in this last year & we hope that yours has been one of goodness & that you are looking forward to 2017 with joy & anticipation along with us!

The beginning of the year & the spring were definitely the most “normal” for us, as we enjoyed our little abode, prepared & researched for our summer trip to Europe, watched the girls grow & spent time with one another. In February, we celebrated Katie being declared FOUR years cancer free! It is always such a gift to hear that declaration & then to shout it from the rooftops. We went on hikes on warm days, puddle-jumped on the rainy ones & spent the cold days inside reading piles of books by the fire & dancing to music on the record player. Our travels including flying out to Texas to visit family, where we had a grand old time going to the zoo, lots of parks & eating delicious chocolate chip cookies. We also took a few trips to southern California to visit family & friends as well as spent time at magical Disneyland.

Eliana turned THREE in March & we celebrated her by spending the day blowing bubbles, eating chocolate cake & lots of singing. Also in March, we found a true fixer-upper & decided that it was worth changing what our projected year looked like because of its future value & fit for our family & after a crazy few weeks of getting things in order, we bought the house, got our house ready to put on the market & by the first weekend of May our little abode was listed! Within days we had multiple offers & by the time we left for our trip to Europe a month later, we had sold our first home! It was INCREDIBLE seeing how it all worked out & the peace we were able to leave for Europe with. Also at the end of May, Cora turned ONE! We celebrated her birthday with Riah Joy her cousin, being they are only 12 days apart. We had good friends & family come eat cake & celebrate our little May bébés with their wildflower crowns & beautiful faces. It was a perfect party.

In June we spent 3 weeks traveling with Katie’s parents across Switzerland, northern Italy, Austria & England. It was most definitely, one of the BEST parts of this year. This trip was absolutely perfect. We stayed at great places, didn’t miss a single train, ate gelato (or “belato” according to Eliana) at Lake Como, stood at the base of a waterfall in Lauterbrunnen, rode on a gondola in Venice, saw the Crown Jewels in the pouring rain, sang folk songs with a few Austrian grandmas in the forests outside of Vienna, ate schnitzel in Salzburg & had simply a marvelous summer tour. It was incredible & we wouldn’t change a thing about it. In June we also celebrated our 7 year wedding anniversary while abroad which seems to be the way it happens for us! The rest of the summer brought us fully into our season of remodeling our new home, with trips to Pinecrest, Oregon, Bodie & southern California in between.

The fall continued to be very BUSY & BEAUTIFUL for us with Noah in his 4th year of teaching 7th grade English as well as working on our new house each day alongside Katie’s dad. Katie is subbing about once a week but is primarily home with the girls & enjoying it greatly. She is continuing to blog about our family adventures at thejenkstribe.com & doing pre-school with Eliana, who is growing up way too fast. Cora is growing up way too fast as well & is keeping us on our toes with her enthusiasm & joy. Both girls are TRUE GIFTS & their blossoming sisterhood brings our hearts such pleasure. The fall has brought us daily walks, nature exploration, tea parties, princess dresses, dancing & singing, parks, library visits, baking & lots of outdoor activities. Becoming parents (next to being married & loving Jesus) is the best thing that we could have ever chosen. It is rewarding beyond measure. We are so grateful.

Each & every day we have a simple choice to CHOOSE a life for ourselves full of happiness. We try to practice that especially in years like this that has had seasons of chaos & busyness. It is valuable, keeps us healthy, makes us stronger & ultimately builds our foundation of peace. We know that the hope we carry, not just in the holiday season but all year long, is so much SWEETER when we choose to experience it each day. This year has most definitely been one of establishing our foundation. We have chosen joy, chosen kindness & chosen to enjoy our lives day in & day out. We will REJOICE & be glad!

May this season of coziness, of family & community & friends, of hot cocoa & Nat King Cole, bring your spirit more than just good feelings. May it establish within you a DEEP sense of happiness that will last all the year through. We wish for you a truly MERRY CHRISTMAS & A HAPPY NEW YEAR today & for all of 2017! From our little tribe to yours, we are thankful for you being a part of our lives & hope your heart & home will be filled to overflowing with blessings in this season. Peace to you!

With love & cheer,

Noah, Katie, Eliana & Cora Jenks.

P.S. Baby Jenks #3 coming in June 2017!

There you have it! I will share more soon about what my goals & prayers are for the year 2017 & what my heart is singing about as well as how my goals for last year panned out. Peace & Joy to you friends! HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Cheers,

Katie.

England & its rain

img_3100

“London, thou art the flower of cities all!” -William Dunbar

England! The land of english speaking, beer pubs, gardens, medieval towers, castles, fish & chips, rain, bridges, & the Queen. A good place. A MARVELOUS place to end our trip with. My only regret is that we didn’t have an extra day to stay & explore more, but hey, there’s always next time. 😉 And, it is always good to “have a next time”.

img_3061

We flew into Heathrow from our exit in Vienna, Austria & arrived in the afternoon. We hopped on the tube & headed towards the main part of London to find our hostel. It was a great location & with Noah’s stellar leading we found it without any issues. We were blessed to have a large family room with a bathroom all to ourselves! (We have a bit of hostel experience & this doesn’t usually happen. So it was a treat!) We spread our stuff out all over the bunk beds, grabbed city maps & headed out. We booked it to the Tower of London thinking we could tour it that evening, but ended up not having enough time to do it justice, so we decided that we would get City Passes & tour the Tower the next day. We walked around, drank coffee, enjoyed the foggy town & its intermittent rain spells, walked across the London Bridge & back again, took lots of pictures, walked through the parks, visited Buckingham Palace & did our due diligence waving at the guards & ended our first day of touring at a nice little pub where we had gigantic hamburgers & beer. It was perfect! From there we took the tube back to our hostel & crashed out.

img_3052

img_3045

The next day was our one extremely full day of being the ULTIMATE tourists. We woke up & enjoyed  (not really) our instant coffee & wheat flakes before heading out to brave the big city. We had purchased our special city passes the night before, so after finding some better coffee we went to a designated bus stop for our bus tour. We rode it until we came to Paddington station where we boarded a tiny train bound for Windsor Castle, where the Queen still stays on the weekends. It was overcast & OH so perfect. We were surrounded by school groups & listened to our handy dandy walking tour guide through headphones & tried not to bump into people. We were able to see the changing of the guards, eat lunch & tour the castle before the girls had their no-nap meltdowns. After that, we went & had sandwiches at a little cafe & got on the little train back to Paddington station.

img_3044

img_3063

img_3064

img_3070

Once there we walked through the rain back to another bus stop that took us on a tour around the city where it felt like we saw so many things, but in reality scratched the surface. London is an immense city with SO much to see & do! It was perfect timing, because both girls took naps the entire time. It was a good break for all of us. We hopped off once we got back to the Tower of London & barely made it onto the last guided tour of the day with the Beefeaters while the skies OPENED UP! It was insane how hard it was raining. We learned a lot, saw the crown jewels & got absolutely drenched while we laughed & ran from covered spot to covered spot before leaving. That was quite a memory, I’m so grateful for it.

“Rain is grace; rain is the sky descending to the earth; without rain, there would be no life.” -Rabindranath Tagore

img_3076

img_3079

From there we decided to try the traditional fish & chips, which in hindsight was probably not a good idea because none of us typically eat fried food… but hey, when in England. We jumped on a boat tour after that which took us up the river Thames. It was great & the tour guide was both hilarious & informative. He made quite a few tips that day, for sure. We disembarked at Big Ben & toured around, saw Westminster Abbey & got bombarded with street petitioners because it happened to be VOTING DAY. Each time we got stopped, we just had to say we were american & then we’d move on. It was fascinating being in that nation on THAT monumental day. It seems like things like that happen each time Noah & I travel internationally. A while back we were in Spain when they won the World Cup & that was absolutely ridiculous. SO COOL. I’ve never enjoyed soccer/football so much. 🙂

img_3084

img_3095

After that we headed back into the tube to get back over to our hostel, but with how much rain there was, some of the lines were flooded…Let’s just say that that creates chaos & the crowds trying to cram into each train car are in each others armpits & basically holding you so as to not get smashed by the closing doors. This ALSO happens when Noah & I travel. It’s always humorous. Unless you are claustrophobic. Not to mention that everyone was soaking wet from the rain & sweating from the mass of people, so the smell was also, well yuck. Everyone was gracious towards our family unit though, which I was impressed with because of it being time for everyone’s commute home for the evening. It had to have been our cute kids. They open doors nothing else will. A huge perk of traveling with little ones! We got separated at one point during the chaos, but thank goodness my mom has a LOUD voice. 🙂 It all worked out & we ended our last evening in London at a pub standing outside in the rain with our beer. It was PERFECT. That night we showered & packed our stuff so as to be in the right weight category (free) for our flight back home the next day. After almost 3 weeks of traveling, I was impressed with all of us. Our bags, including a few souvenirs picked up along the way, were all less than 9 lbs. Pretty rad. My mom was superwoman & jam packed her bag because she was flying separate from us & had a bit more room allowed for her carry on. The next morning we got up, grabbed some egg croissants & espresso from a train station kiosk & headed in two different directions. My mom flew out of Heathrow, so she went her way & we took a different line to Gatwick. On the train we met a group of traveling dancers who played with Cora & taught Eliana how to point her toes like a ballerina. It was sweet.

img_3104

img_3105

img_3102

At the airport, we boarded our flight home & were delayed an hour & half getting off the ground…with no explanation. But we did eventually get in the air & made it to Iceland, where we were told once we landed that our next flight was delayed an additional 3 hours. It seemed like the tiny airport was swarming with other travelers also stuck in the same predicament. At that point there is nothing else to do but let the little ones run WILD to get their wiggles out, order a pizza & charge your phone. The airport had a row of baby carriages (old school strollers without any harness systems) to use while stuck in the airport like we were, so we took turns pushing Cora around in it, making sure she stayed seated so as to not fall out. Well, of course, that DID happen because she is so quick & luckily Noah grabbed her before she did a full tumble onto the concrete. She did however, score her very first fat bloody lip & covered her onesie with blood. She was a trooper though, & by the next day her lip was back to normal. Plus, we get to say that it happened in Iceland, so that’s pretty cool, especially if she ends up becoming a stunt woman or something.

img_3115

img_3119

img_3113

Eventually we got back in the air & made it home to the big old US of A after a VERY long day of travel. The girls took short naps during the course of the flight home & we adults, did not. By the time we arrived at LAX, we were delirious. My amazing brother & sister in love picked us up & we crashed at their house for the night before driving 5 1/2 hours home the next day.

That, my friends, brings us to the end of our summer of 2016 european adventure!

Needless to say, it was INCREDIBLE. It was the best part of my summer, personally. I was so full of joy, I had such great peace, & my heart was singing to be getting the amazing opportunity to travel again. If I made enormous amounts of money, I would make it a HABIT to travel, both domestically as well as internationally. It is so rewarding, so fulfilling, so enlightening, so exciting. And so exhausting, but so so worth it. I am grateful beyond words that we had the opportunity to GO & that we chose to do just that. The memories gained from an experience like that are so valuable to me. Getting to travel the globe with my husband, my girls & my parents (!!!) was such a treat. I really hope that we will get to do a multi-generational trip again someday. I am blessed. BLESSED.

“You can’t cross the sea merely by standing and staring at the water.” -Rabindranath Tagore

It has been wonderful for my heart to reminisce over the past few months of my life by getting to look back on the highlights from a great trip. Sometimes in life, regardless of what is going on in TODAY, looking back & reflecting with thanksgiving in our hearts & on our lips is significant. It can shift things into perspective for today. It can sometimes be a simple reminder of the sweetness of life. It can push us to reach higher, go deeper. Reflection & meditating on the gift that life has been up until this very breath in our lungs is something we hurry too often, or skip over completely because we are too busy & have too much on our plates to deal with. But taking the time to reflect & BE GRATEFUL is well worth it. It has been a healing balm for my soul to walk down memory lane. Not because my life is insanely hard or because I am in the depths of despair or anything like that, but just because it reminds my heart of the goodness in my life. The gift that it is to be alive & to get to eat gelato in Italy with my 3 year old. Things like that. I encourage you to reflect on the last few months of your own life & see what it has offered you. Find the sweet things. The little moments, or the big ones for that matter! It is ALL valuable because it is part of your story. It has helped shape who you are in this exact moment in time. Reflect. It’s good.

“Meditation is the soul’s perspective glass.” -Owen Feltham

I’m glad I did.

My heart is full.

Cheers,

Katie.

Austria & its history

img_2917

“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.” -Marcel Proust

Austria! Oh my lanta. It was such a joy getting to travel back to Austria. Riding a train through its landscape is worth every penny. We traveled to Austria after leaving Venice by train. It was a beautiful day getting to experience the northern part of Italy we traveled through & into Austria as we made our way to Salzburg. We met some very interesting people on our different trains & made it to Salzburg exhausted from the day of travel but more RICH because of it. My eyeballs were so grateful for the entire day.

img_2885

Once we arrived in Salzburg, we heave-hoed our backpacks & walked the 2 miles to our AirBnB, that was LITERALLY, sitting right below the fortress walls overlooking the old town. It was the BEST location thus far for what we were wanting with exploring by foot. Cobblestone streets & all. Once we settled into our room, we went & explored a bit. We found a tavern that didn’t look like much from the outside but you could hear voices traveling up from within its walls & it had  wiener schnitzel on the menu so we dove in. It went on & on! Practically every table was full & all of the servers wore traditional leather lederhosen. We ate one of the best meals of our trip there complete with schnitzel & beer. It was ALL delicious. From there, we crashed out for the night after planning our next few days of exploring the old city.

“Wherever you go, go with all your heart.” -Confucius

img_2835

img_2828

img_2892

The next day we started off our very full day with breakfast at an outdoor cafe & headed off on a hike to the fortress, which really looks like a castle, but hey. Fortress it is. It is called Hohensalzburg Fortress & it’s STUNNING. We paid to get in & got our headsets with a walking tour & explored. It was great! We spent several hours walking around learning all about the fortress & the history of Salzburg. If you are ever headed to Austria, Salzburg is a must in my opinion as well as touring the fortress. Do it. After getting our fill of the castle (& desperately needing food), we headed back down into the old town where there was a race going on. We sat in the cheering section as each (very) long distance runner (either a 50 mile distance for some or 80 mile distance for others) made their way across the finish line & cheered along with everyone there. We had bratwursts & beer & massive chocolate covered pretzels. DELISH. It was a delightful experience. From there we opted out of naps so as to continue our exploration. We downloaded a Rick Steves podcast (another must if you are traveling Europe, they are wonderful!), & went on our walking tour of the old town. We got to see some of the places that the “Sound of Music” had been filmed as well as some of the true locations where the Von Trapp family had been during their time in Salzburg. We learned about Mozart (He was born there & lived in Salzburg until he was 17 & moved to Vienna) & his experience in the city, saw incredible churches & listened to live music. It rained & we just covered up & kept on walking!  We had dinner at the same restaurant from the night before & had ice cream after. It was a LONG day, but so full! We even heard a choir practice in an old stone building & it echoed gently down the streets right after hearing the church bells toll. Eliana thought it was angels singing. For the rest of the trip every time she heard church bells, she asked if the angels were going to sing!  It was a beautiful day in SO many ways.

img_2840

img_4244

The next day we headed back out to the train station where we boarded a train headed for a teeny tiny little village tucked on a hillside next to a lake called Hallstatt. (A dream come true for me!) It was so PERFECT, it seemed fake. You know what I mean? It was raining & foggy & oh so glorious. We got off at a train stop & headed down to a rickety ferry with two crusty old sailors who ferried us to the other side of the lake. (Hallstatt is accessed by train & then boat. Come on.) It was raining lightly when we arrived but within 30 minutes it was pouring! We ate some gyros from a great little food truck next to the ferry landing & then did a loop around the town. We popped into woodcarving shops, the church & watched the swans on the lake. AND took lots of pictures. LOTS. I could live there. If you have ever been to Disneyland & ridden on “It’s a Small World”, you can get a taste of this place. It was like a fairytale come to life. Even with the torrential rain, it was MAGICAL. We spent a few hours getting soaked & enjoyed some hot coffee before boarding our ferry to head back to Salzburg for the evening. Another must for Austria (in my opinion) is to take the 2 1/2 hour trip for the day to visit this quaint town. It was iconic Austria for me. That evening, once we returned to Salzburg & changed into dry clothes, we ate at an italian restaurant right outside of our AirBnB & then did another few loops throughout the old town. It was amazing at dusk, when all the tourists (minus us) had disappeared & the streets were empty.

“Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson

That concluded our time in that region of Austria. The next morning we took a taxi (it was raining again & walking two miles in the rain with two littles & all our stuff didn’t sound too appealing), which was quick & a great decision back to the train station. We sat & had espresso & croissants & jumped on our high speed train to Vienna. Once there, we headed out to the main part of the city with another Rick Steves podcast. We spent several hours being “Viennese”, including sitting at a famous side street cafe having coffee. We saw loads of ornate fountains, toured the Hapsburg palace, prayed in St. Stephen’s cathedral, & visited a WWII memorial. It was a WHOLE lot of history in a short period of time. I was impressed by Vienna, for sure! After traipsing around & getting a shotgun tour we hopped back on a train headed for the forests outside of the city & were picked up by our 79 year old AirBnB host who took us to her house encased with flowers & vines & all things green & good. It was the best experience as far as staying in someone’s home has gone with our AirBnB-ing, especially in the sense of cultural immersion. Gerda was INCREDIBLE. We broke bread together, celebrated her 9th grandchild’s birth with some of her friends while singing along to Noah playing folk songs on the guitar, had homemade strudel, visited a heurige (a wine tavern open only when the new wine is harvested & closed for the rest of the year) & tasted the new wine, walked through meadows & spent time outdoors in the sunshine of the garden after all the rain we had gotten. It was a much needed time of rest before the last portion of our journey. It was EXACTLY what I was hoping for! Thank you Gerda for an unforgettable experience sharing your home & sitting under your wisdom.

The next morning Gerda & one of her lovely friends drove us back to train station so we wouldn’t have to take a bus. It was so gracious of them! We hopped back onto the train & headed back towards Vienna, for the airport. From there we were headed out on a flight back to Great Britain to round out the final days of our trip. I will blog about that portion of our summer trip soon!

“Certainly, travel is more than seeing the sites; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.” -Mary Ritter Beard

Overall, Austria was a highlight for me. We had so many different experiences, met INCREDIBLE people, consumed yummy food & drink, sang folk songs with some delightful austrian grandmas, rode the train across the country, stood on top of a castle, learned a great deal about the immense & impressive austrian history & really experienced the culture. It was an ENRICHING week in a beautiful land. What more could we have asked for?

Like I keep saying, if you want to GO, just DO IT! Explore! Adventure! Journey! It will enrich your life & infuse you with more cultural understanding & depth. Plus you’ll get to eat really interesting food. Win. Win.

I hope you are enjoying walking down memory lane with me! AND I hope it inspires you to grab ahold of some of your own dreams & go after them.
